Thronateeska Heritage Center Announces Official Opening of Air & Space Exhibit Featuring Heat Pipe Technology Display
ALBANY, GA. (Jan. 25, 2011) - Thronateeska Heritage Center is proud to announce the opening of the Heat Pipe Technology display in the newly completed Air & Space Exhibit area of the Science Museum. The exhibit will open to the public at 10:00 am on Thursday, January 27th.
Bob's Candies was an innovator in the candy-making industry from the company's beginning in 1919 in Albany, Georgia. Continuing in that innovative vein, they offered to partner with NASA in the 1980s to test heat pipe technology, a revolutionary new system in precise temperature and humidity control that was part of NASA's Spinoff Technology Program. Due to seasonal demand for their Christmas candies, Bob's had to store their products year-round until shipping season in the fall. Hot and humid climates in Southwest Georgia made it difficult to keep the candy fresh and crisp and conventional methods of air conditioning proved expensive.
As a participant in NASA's Spinoff Technology Program, a program begun to retrofit space technologies for practical, everyday use on Earth, Bob's Candies helped bring a clean, energy-smart technology to the limelight. Heat Pipe Technology and Bob's Candies, along with many other participating organizations and individuals, were inducted into the Space Technology Hall of Fame in 1990 through their accomplishments.
The exhibit will be open to the public for the first time on Thursday, January 27th. The Science Museum is open to the public Thursday through Saturday from 10:00am - 4:00pm with free admission. Thronateeska Heritage Center members and invited guests are welcome to attend a special preview of the Heat Pipe Technology display at 6:00pm on January 27th.
"A Thread in Time," a story about the cotton textile industry in Albany, will also be opening to the public on January 27th, in the History Museum. The History Museum is open to the public Thursday through Saturday from 10:00am -- 4:00pm with free admission.
